This legendary collectors item was issued by the American Tobacco Company from 1909 to 1911, the year in which Wagner asked that the card be discontinued. As a result only 60 to 200 cards were ever released, according to O'Keeffe's "The Card: Collectors, Con Men, and the True Story of History's Most Desired Baseball Card." These cards have gone on to become prized possessions, and scandals involving fake versions of the card occur periodically.
The "Gretzky" version of this card was at one point bought by ice hockey star Wayne Gretzky for $451,000, adding to it's presence as a legendary sports totem. This card was most recently purchased in 2007 for $2.8 million.
