There are five general categories of abandonware:
- Software that is technically owned by a company but no longer supported by game systems
- Software that was copyrighted by a company that has since gone out of business
- Shareware, which is provided to users for free or on a trial basis by the copyright owner
- Unmaintained shareware
- Open source programs that have been abandoned by their creators
None of these kinds of abandonware are legal to reproduce without permission from their owners or copyright expiration.
